Racehorse owner Tabor, a founding shareholder in BetVictor, sold the Arthur Price chain of betting shops to bookmaker Coral for a reported £27m in 1995.
He said: “I believe the BetVictor brand has enormous potential and is well-placed to continue its expansion with further investment and strategic development.'
Victor Chandler added: “Having owned and led this business for more than 40 years, I looked towards the future and I decided that the company would be best served under new ownership and leadership.
'I have known Mr Tabor for many years and I am confident that the company will continue to thrive under his ownership.'

Quality is the word to describe BetVictor. From the aesthetics to the performance and everything in between, everything is quality.

One of the first betting enterprises to go online, BetVictor (formerly known as Victor Chandler) bring an international pedigree and a sense of decorum to the stage as one of the UK’s best value bookmakers.

The site and apps are sleek, the in-play service is on par with the best and their basic odds are some of the strongest around for football betting. There is a pride in the product BetVictor have created, and as a customer this feels like a welcoming place to bet, with reliable markets, regular promotions, and features that pop.

Available Markets

Since they serve an international customer base BetVictor have to cover a lot of ground to stay relevant. As a result, they have become famed for the depth and range of their sportsbook, particularly for football betting which is very strong indeed for European leagues, but you can also bet on 2nd Division Indian leagues or the Tunisian Cup, for example. Their sports list is approaching 40 categories and as well as the usual suspects these include Volleyball, Netball, and Floorball. There’s nothing too whacky to be found here, though.

BetVictor have a small book of non-sport and specials markets for you to bet on including TV shows, Eurovision, sports personality, and politics, but as a more serious bookmaker they are not known for their novelty bets. BetVictor do not offer financials betting either, but their Virtuals are pretty good and they plug them a fair bit.

When it comes to depth, BetVictor offer around 80+ different betting lines on major events, especially big football; you can bet on anything from a straight win to corner betting. This isn’t as many as some other top bookmakers but you will find markets that don’t appear often, including loads of Asian and combination bets. You can also request odds using the #PriceItUp feature, and your bet will then be added to the site for others to use if they fancy it.

The Horses also enjoy global coverage at BetVictor and using the Betfinder feature you could stumble across a real gem. If you are the type to bet in advance you will be pleased with the number of ante-post options too – they were taking bets on Cheltenham 2020 in March 2019.

Odds Value

One of the benefits of being online only and based abroad in a territory with lower taxes is that you can afford to give the very best odds, and BetVictor usually do. You will often see them at the top of the table on odds comparison sites across all sports, in-play and futures, and especially for football. They even claim to have offered the best odds overall in most football seasons, with 71% of odds higher than the median value on odds comparison websites (that’s the middle price, not the average). If you aren’t a fan of research you can almost guarantee a top price here.

Enhanced odds promotions are a strong point of BetVictor, who tend to use price boosts as their main form of daily offer. In general, though, they rely on the quality of their operation and consistently favourable odds to win and hold customers rather than constant offers. Saying that there are some regular money back offers and enhanced accumulator offers available as well as guaranteed prices on horse racing plus footy acca's.

BetVictor offer the widest range of odds formats going, being available in fraction, decimal, American, Chinese and Indonesian formats – all easily adjusted above the betslip.

Bets & Payouts

Every year you will read a story of someone placing a bet with high odds only to have the winnings capped because they didn’t read the terms of the maximum payout. Don’t be the next glum looking feller in the news article, do your research. Bookies offer vastly different maximum payouts for each market type so be sure you know what they are if you like to take big odds.

BetVictor are a middling bookie when it comes to max payouts; for horse and greyhound racing the maximum payout is £500k, the same goes for major men’s football matches. Other major sports are generally £100k. Payouts on non-sporting events are particularly low at £5k and virtuals sit at £50k.

The maximum any customer can win in any one day is capped at £500,000, so don’t stake more than necessary to hit this figure.

When placing multiple bets combining selections from several markets or betting lines your maximum payout will be capped based on the market with the lowest maximum. Be careful and check the terms before placing bets like these.

Maximum and minimum bets depend on the type of selection(s) but at BetVictor this is generally as low as £0.05 (€0.06, $0.09). The maximum allowed bet is usually defined by the maximum payout, however, unlike some bookmakers, this is not easily discoverable on the bet slip so always check the maximum payout for your market first.

With over a million customers in over 160 countries you would expect BetVictor to offer a full spectrum of currencies and payment options and low and behold they certainly do.

You can deposit and manage your account in: Australian Dollars (AUD), Canadian Dollars (CAD), Euros (EUR), New Zealand Dollars (NZD), Norwegian Kroner (NOK), South African Ran (ZAR) Swedish Krona (SEK), Swiss Francs (CHF), UK Pounds Sterling (GBP) and United States Dollars (USD). Just be aware that once you have selected an account currency you cannot change it.

Min and max deposit amounts are variable by currency but for UK bettors the minimum is only £5 via most banking methods, and the highest it will be is £20. This means you don’t have to hold more money in your account than you are comfortable with, and can even deposit on a bet by bet basis if it suits you.

Withdrawals

You can withdraw your money using most of the same methods used to deposit with the exception of PaySafeCard and prepayment cards. Withdrawals are free of charge at their end although your bank or provider may charge for some transactions, particularly wire transfers. All withdrawal fees are clearly stated at the time of withdrawal.

BetVictor will process your withdrawal transaction immediately which is great news and as it should be. They do state slightly longer maximum waiting times but experience tells me this is unusual so they must just be covering their backs. They state up to 3 days for e-wallets, for example, but it rarely takes this long.

The minimum and maximum withdrawal amounts vary by method but in general, the minimum is £10. If using a bank transfer the minimum is £25 (BACS) or £100 (International), although there is no maximum when withdrawing this way. For requests over $50,000, you may get it in several separate transactions.

The User Experience

I say this with complete transparency, BetVictor is probably my favourite website for betting. It is one of the easiest to navigate, the least crowded, robust in performance and really good to look at. With a black border and white panel, the gentle tones of blue, grey and green really stand out to give the place a refined professional feel, while simultaneously working hand in hand with the small icons that pepper the site to sign-post the various betting options with clarity.

It’s deceptive actually because the interface is so clean and spacious yet there is a heck of a lot waiting under the bonnet – this website is packed but it feels breezy. With a really simple and easy to use menu bar you can find what you want in seconds despite the fantastic market depth, while quick links are kept to a sensible minimum to keep the place looking tidy.

There is quite a lot going on in the sidebar menu but once you get going this comes into its own by offering ‘top links’ that relate to the category you have chosen; so what you will see in the Greyhounds category will be useful and totally different to what you will see in the Horses category. It means you are never being offered something that you haven’t already shown an interest in.

There’s nothing to complain about in terms of speed or performance either, this is a well oiled machine running on a powerful engine that can cope with quick clicking fingers and sudden changes of mind.

If I could make one improvement it would be to cut down the amount of scrolling you need to do within busier markets, but there are organisational options like market categories to help with this. Oh, and you might need your glasses if you struggle with smaller writing.

If you have any suggestions of your own you could always use the Suggestion Box at the bottom of each page and let them know – yes, really.

Useful Features

BetVictor don’t fall over themselves to throw extra’s at their customers like some other bookies do; there are no crazy side games or hard sell betting features. Instead, what they do offer in the way of extra’s is genuinely useful and designed to be an aid for the thinking bettor, and to save them time.

Bet Calculator

We must give a special mention to the bet calculator available at BetVictor. This feature is entirely free to use by anyone - you do not even need to hold an account with BetVictor to use it.

The tool allows you to calculate potential returns from pretty much any single, multiple, full-cover or system bet and even allows you to build any wager you like that doesn't fall into a typical category.

The calculator will let you work out returns each-way, with rule 4, deal heats and void selections, you can even use it to work out straight and reverse forecasts once the dividend is announced.

This is not just a great feature for keeping track of your bets, it also allows you to understand them better. Each bet type comes with a guide on how they work and how to place them meaning you can even use it to branch out a little and try new types of wager you hadn't thought to use before.

Betfinder

Another innovative little feature is the Betfinder, which allows you to search all of today’s or tomorrow’s runners based on a combination of star rating, short/medium/long odds, previous form on the day’s course/distance, and horses that have seen recent improvement.

Combine these options with ‘Edges’ such as in form jockeys/trainers, recent winners, recent runners, and those that have beaten the favourite, and you could bag yourself a fantastic nag at great odds in a matter of seconds.

It’s particularly useful for finding runners and gaining insight into regions you might not have much experience of, like South Africa or the USA. It uses the latest TimeForm data to come up with the results and is free to use.

Betting Live

In-Play

The live in-play betting service offered by BetVictor is one of the best in the industry, which is high praise indeed considering the competition. The interface is a pleasure to use and the markets are expansive; as I write this on a miserable Friday morning there are 13 different categories available with more coming up throughout the day.

Initially, you will need to choose a sports category from the Live or the Upcoming list, at which point you can select the event you are looking for. These collapsible listings make it easy to explore before you commit to a choice and you can also cycle through popular bet types and make them there and then, eliminating the need to load a further page at all.

If you do select a specific game you will get access to many more betting lines of course, as well as text commentary (of sorts) and stats with a nice graphic. Combined with quick access to the latest results the live betting at BetVictor is an immersive experience.

A useful favourites tab is also provided allowing you to check off events and sports for even quicker access to the in-play markets you want to bet on, and we can’t argue with the odds. The betting lines too are kept interesting without getting silly, and there are some well chosen market categories to flit between in the event view.

Live Streaming

BetVictor like a lot of other bookmakers will allow you to stream UK and Irish horse racing as long as you have wagered at least £1 on a race. Beyond this, the BetVictor live streaming offering goes no further, which is a bit of a let down considering the pedigree of the rest of the site. So if you enjoy watching live streaming for other sports integrated with live betting you will have to use another bookmaker.

Of course, you could always watch the event via another channel and stick with BetVictor for the bets themselves. It might be a bit of a faff but it’s worth it for the great odds that BetVictor offer, especially on live football. You could even use another bookmaker's streaming service if you were feeling sneaky…

The Mobile Package

The app and mobile site are another jewel in BetVictor’s crown. You cannot fail to notice the exemplary design and development here. The app has a minimalist feel and yet gives access to the full spectrum of services including streaming the Horses. It is quick to load, feels effortless in the hand and is as responsive as I have seen anywhere else.

Split simply into Sports, In-Play, and Casino with quick links to your betslip and cash out, this is a place for action. Live or imminent fixtures will be on show as standard, while the Menu button contains the A-Z. With certain sports you can also narrow down your search somewhat in the A-Z, saving time later on.

When looking at the in-play markets the minimalist design borders on becoming bland before you make a selection, it feels unfinished somehow, but this is my only minor niggle.

This is the perfect product for those that just want a mobile app to place bets with rather than for blogs or features or entertainment - it’s a betting tool rather than an entertainment app. The lack of erroneous material means both the app and mobile site perform tasks at optimal speed too, which is especially important when betting in-play.

You could run your account entirely from your mobile such is the capability of what they have built here. It looks just as good as the desktop site and runs equally as smoothly.

BetVictor Casino

BetVictor offer a full casino, live casino, poker, games and slots and the best range of virtual sports going. The products are more integrated than with most other operators too allowing you to move seamlessly between sections.

You can get additional sign up bonuses for these services but for more information read our full review in our casino and gaming section over at OnlineCasinos.org.uk.

Everything is covered from the software they use, the various games that are available, payout rates and more.

Help! I Need Somebody

Good news and bad news here. On a positive note BetVictor customer services are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week via e-mail or live chat. On a less positive note, while there is a phone number all you get is a recorded message directing you to e-mail or live chat - the customer services address seems to have been pulled as well. It’s only fair to point out that you can request a call back via an online form, but if your internet is down you’ve had it.

This isn’t particularly encouraging on the one hand, but then since staff are on hand all day and night BetVictor can’t be accused of neglect either. Plus, staff are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable, and they all speak English.

A searchable pop up help centre is also available at the top of the screen for general enquires but again, there is good and bad here. This feature is one of the best of its type if we focus on the build quality; it is fast and spacious so information comes across clearly and can be easily digested. However, some of the articles feel incomplete and you might have to visit a number of them to get all the information you want (banking, for instance, it’s scattered all over the place).

It’s better than it used to be but needs tightening up.

Who is BetVictor For?

Relentlessly favourable odds make BetVictor a great shout if you only want to use one betting site but you also want fair prices and terms every time. If you also prefer a more professional atmosphere in which to do your betting and an interface that functions well without unnecessary bells and whistles then you should probably call BetVictor home.

A lack of streaming (Horses excepted) and regular offers causes a shortfall when compared with other big names but if all you want are great odds and clear expansive markets then no one is going to give you better. Plus, streaming aside, the in-play service is excellent and gives some features others do not.

Of particular note are the unparalleled virtual sports on offer from BetVictor. You can bet on virtual horse and dog racing, football, speedway, cycling, tennis and more. Graphics are superb and the commentary is excellent, you honestly feel like you are watching a live event. All of this is available on mobile too, which can stand proud as a fantastic betting platform in its own right.

Three Generations of BetVictor

BetVictor are the modern reincarnation of the original Victor Chandler brand. William Chandler, grandfather to the aforementioned Victor Chandler, originally opened Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium in 1925 laying the foundations for what was to come. However, it was not until 1946 that his son, Victor Chandler, started the business we know today.

Following changes in legislation in the early 1960s which allowed off site gambling, Victor opened a series of high street sites in the South East and saw some success. Following his sudden death in 1975 his son, also called Victor, took the reins and began to aggressively expand into foreign markets. He then opened an office in Antigua to take bets from far-eastern clients.

This was a taste of things to come because Victor famously moved his entire business to Gibraltar in 1998. At the time this offered a big benefit to the punter, as it avoided the 9% betting tax at the time meaning they could keep prices strong. Whatever the reason, other bookmakers took note, and it is widely believed that this move played a key role in the decision of then Chancellor, Gordon Brown, to abolish gambling taxes in 2001.

Following a name change to VC Bet in 2004, Victor decided to revert back to the full name in 2008 before rebranding again in 2012 to its current incarnation, BetVictor. The company are truly international with over half a million customers in 160 countries driving a turnover of over £1 billion and employing at least 350 people. Victor himself owns a number of horses and is among the top 500 richest people in the world.

BetVictor are known for having a diverse but professional book and a stronger international pedigree than most traditional UK bookmakers. One of the first bookies to have a serious online presence, BetVictor are a bookmaker for serious pundits. BetVictor have excellent in play features and possibly the best football betting options around.

When BetVictor moved offshore they were in uncharted territory and took a big leap at a time focusing on the future of online betting when most others were still focused on high street shops. They set the benchmark and these days pretty much all online bookies have their online operations based in Gibraltar, Malta or somewhere else, and tax laws have changed so that all companies, wherever they are based pay a point of consumption tax on all UK bets. They offer services in several languages and accept many currencies and banking options to cater to their international clientele.
